Throughout the ancient world various methods of divination and scrying were implored for the goals of prophecy, psychic exploration, or making contact with recently departed loved ones and ancestral spirits. While undoubtedly entwined with elder Stone Age practices of proto-religious ritualism and shamanism, not all practitioners of these traditions would actively utilize them for the purest and noblest of intentions. Commonly, for a price, fortune telling was prevalent in many a bar and brothel across the antiquities of Egypt, Greece, Babylon, and parts of Asia.
Astrology, palm reading, tea leaves, extispicy of animal intestines, and crystal gazing were wildly popular in the BC era, easily available to both exalted royalty and humble servants alike. A variety of reasons present themselves as to why human beings continually choose to explore the vast terrains of our shadowy, and principally incomprehensible mass psyche. While we should always strive to “Know Thyself” on a transcendental level, the social engineering desire for increased power, expansion of wealth, wider kingdoms and grander temples are usually chief cornerstones among the calculated decisions of our gatekeepers.
